BLOWING ROCK — The body of a man was found Saturday afternoon off the Blue Ridge Parkway, according to the National Park Service. (NPS)
NPS said dispatchers received a report from a park visitor about a body found near one of the overlooks Saturday around 1:14 p.m.
Law enforcement rangers found the man shortly after, located below the Yadkin Valley Overlook at milepost 289.8.
Preliminary information gathered by investigators does not suggest any ongoing concern for public safety, or that this investigation is related to any other ongoing investigations, the NPS said in a statement.
The cause of death is unknown, according to law enforcement.
An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 12, to determine the identity and cause of death of the subject, the statement said.
The investigation is being led by the NPS Investigative Services Branch with assistance from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation issued a statement early Monday morning that said they do not believe the body found was that of Brian Laundrie, the man wanted in connection with the killing of his girlfriend, Gabrielle Petito.
Petitio’s remains were found on Sept. 19, having been reported as missing on Sept. 11.
Laundrie has gone missing after a brief period of returning home without Petitio, from a cross country trip. There have been previous reports that Laundrie might be in North Carolina, hiking and camping along the Appalachian Trail.
No further details are available at this time.
