Kings Creek Elementary School recently was honored for an accelerated learning curriculum that school officials say has been highly successful.

The school was honored by Imagine Learning, a national foundation that designed the accelerated learning curriculum, as a 2020-21 Imagine Nation Beacon School for its success.

Imagine Learning’s curriculum helps students process information at a higher level in literacy and math, said Melissa Costin, principal at Kings Creek Elementary School. It uses digital lessons to adapt to the different ways that students learn and continuously push students to think a little harder with each new lesson.

“It accelerates their rate of learning,” she said. “This tool is just one way teachers are working to help students improve literacy.”

She said that the school used the curriculum in the second through fifth grades.

Out of 16,000 schools in the nation that have implemented the curriculum, only 237 were named a beacon school, including nine others in North Carolina, she said.

“Our teachers work so hard and they do a wonderful job helping students grow and improve,” she said.
