A Burke County woman hired to care for an elderly woman is accused of assaulting her, the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office said.
Linda Sue Denny, 69, of Piney Road is accused of slinging 97-year-old Polly Allred into a bed and putting her hands over Allred’s mouth and holding them there, Cpl. Stephen Raby said.
Denny was a caregiver privately hired by Allred’s family, Raby said.
The incident was reported March 26 after Allred’s family looked through surveillance footage after noticing she had a cut and bruises, Raby said.
Allred was later transported to Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care of Hudson, and she died on April 5.
Investigators are awaiting an autopsy that will show her cause of death, Raby said.
Denny is charged with abuse of a disabled elder with injury. Her bond was set at $25,000 secured, but she paid a portion of her bond and was released from jail a few hours after her arrest on Friday.
Raby said that the incident is still under investigation and further charges are possible.
Denny has no previous felony convictions in North Carolina, according to the N.C. Department of Public Safety.
