Dean Barber

Eula Dean Hatton Barber, 90, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2020.

Affectionately known as Dean, she was born on Aug. 5, 1930, to Fred and Virginia Witherspoon Hatton in Darby, North Carolina. She began her education in a one-room school with her sister, brother, and cousins. Dean was extremely intelligent! She graduated from Lincoln Heights High School in 1948 as Valedictorian. After high school, she went on to pursue her Bachelor of Science in Home Economics at Bluefield State College, located in Bluefield, West Virginia. There she pledged and became a member of the illustrious Greek organization Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated. Dean loved to learn. Her education did not end with a Bachelor’s Degree. After earning her Home Economics Degree from Bluefield College, Dean continued her journey in higher education to obtain a Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling from John Carroll University.

Dean was a dedicated teacher in the Cleveland Ohio Municipal School District, where she taught Home Economics for 27 years. She was very well respected among, not only students, but staff and administrators as well. In fact, Dean had a very special student that she kept in contact with until she fell ill. In addition to working a full-time job as a teacher, Dean also volunteered at centers for abused women prevention.

In 1952, Eula Dean Hatton married the love of her life, Thomas Barber. To their union was born two beautiful baby boys, Derek and Frederick Barber. Her husband and children preceded her in death. However, she nursed them through their illnesses and provided a loving home for her mother whom she also nursed for the remainder of her life.

Dean leaves to cherish her memory two loving grandchildren, Nathan Lee Barber, whom she absolutely adored, and Nikisha Nicole Washington, who served as her empathetic, loving caregiver for the last three years, making their bond even greater; four great-grandchildren, Shamya Washington, Nikiya Washington, Lathaniel Barber and TyJuan Harris; her “Darling Sister,” Ann Janette Baxter; brothers, Maurice Hatton and Paul Hatton (who preceded her in death); and a host of family, and friends.

A receiving of friends will be held on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2020, at Pendry’s Funeral Home in Lenoir from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
