Fred Clark

Fred Jerome Clark, age 101 years 7 months and 5 days, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Tuesday, January 11, 2022 after a period of declining health.

He was born June 6, 1920 in Caldwell County to the late Homer and Callie Estes Clark. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Connie Philyaw Clark; one son, Kenneth “Kenny” Clark; four brothers, Claude, Will, Coye, and Howard Clark; one sister, Faye Clark; and two great-grandchildren.

Fred was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army and served from 1942-1943, upon his return he married his sweetheart, Connie Philyaw in 1944. Since her passing in 2006 he has missed her terribly. Fred was a hard worker, prior to his retirement he was employed at Champion International for 29 years where he surveyed land and marked timber. After his retirement he stayed busy working at the house, gardening, going to the mountains for picnics especially his favorite spot- the Blue Ridge Parkway. Upon his wife’s passing Fred started frequenting the local McDonalds every day for breakfast and lunch. It was there that he has met and enjoyed the company of many dear friends through the years, often times he would even play his harp for them. In 2018 his health began to decline, he was unable to visit McDonalds anymore but he was still able to go on car rides to the parkway. The family would like to thank all of the people who befriended Fred at McDonalds, he spoke of you all often and missed your company very much.

Fred loved his church, gospel music, and all musical instruments especially his harp. After his health declined he would reminisce about his church and his love of music. We find solace in knowing he is with the Lord now and is able to rejoice freely.

Those left to cherish his memory include one daughter and caregiver for 15 years, Frances Clark Harmon and husband Ira of Lenoir; one sister, Elsie Clark Norris and husband Robert of Collettsville; daughter-in-law, Lisa Lipps Clark; ex-daughter-in-law, Denise Watson Clark; three grandchildren, Amy Clark Davis, Kris Clark, and Derek Clark; special nieces, Lois, Judy, and Cindy; and special nephews, Allen, Johnnie, Robert, and Larry.

Funeral services will be held Friday, January 14, 2022 at 11:00 A.M. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home conducted by Rev. Rick Safriet and Rev. Raymond Spann. Military honors will be provided by the U.S. Army. A private interment will be held for the family.
