Shirley Marley Pennington, 90, of Lenoir passed away Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2021, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care- Hudson surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was born April 26, 1930, in Wilkes County to the late Dawson Wolfe and Florence Marley. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 71 years and 11 months, Kyle E. Pennington.
Mrs. Pennington was a loving and caring wife and mother. After raising her family, she worked in the bakery at Lowes Foods and later at Broyhill Occasional 1. She was a wonderful cook, and her children and grandchildren enjoyed many lunches on Sundays after church. Her cooking will be missed dearly by her grandchildren, especially her Christmas dinner. Shirley was dearly loved and adored by many. Many of her children’s friends through the years have adopted her and called her mom.
Those left to cherish her memory include six children, Patricia “Pat” G. Pennington, Karen P. Whitener and husband Ed, Sandra P. Rich, Susan P. McFarland and husband Fred, Micheal Edward Pennington and wife Amanda, all of Lenoir, and Sharon Pennington of Knoxville, Tennessee; one sister, Earlene Borders of Ferguson; sister-in-law, Ora Mae Thibodeau of Delaware; two brothers-in-law, Doug Pennington and wife June of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Stanley Pennington and wife Betty of Lenoir; six grandchildren, Shawn Whitener and wife Kim, Richie Rich and wife Bonnie, Kyle McFarland, Rebecca W. Smith and husband Stuart, Michelle Rich, and Emily McFarland; nine great-grandchildren, Caleb Overcash and wife Casey, Griffin Whitener, Reuben Whitener, Nicholas Smith, Isaac Whitener, Katie Smith, Angelica Rich, Kelli Kelley and husband Gwyn, and Logan Bachstein and wife Rebecca; three great-great-grandchildren, Clayton, Charlie, and Cole Kelley; and one nephew, Bob Borders.
Graveside services will be held Sunday, Feb. 21, 2021 at 2 p.m. at Blue Ridge Memorial Park conducted by Pastor Kay Smith.
Serving as pallbearers will be her grandchildren Shawn, Richie, Michelle, Kyle, Rebecca, and Emily.
Due to COVID-19, face masks and social distancing will be required.
