Thomas P. Winkler, 83, of Lenoir went home to be with his Lord and Savior Feb. 15, 2021. He was born March 3, 1937, in Caldwell County to the late Thomas Lloyd and Iola Francum Winkler. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary (Elgin) Hoyle and Swannie (Robert) Scott.
Tom was owner of Winkler Inc., an underground utility business, for 42 years. After retirement he enjoyed spending time with his mules. He was an accomplished carpenter and woodworker, and loved building wagons and stagecoaches. He loved hanging out at his shop working and talking with his friends. In earlier years he attended many wagon train rides. Farming the “old timey” way was a passion, from plowing the fields with mules to harvesting the hay.
He cherished and adored his wife of 60 years, and his children were his pride and joy. Tom loved his country and was a veteran of the U.S. Army National Guard. While in the guard, he made friendships he enjoyed to this day. Tom was also a deacon and faithful charter member of Green Mountain Baptist Church for 50 years and loved every member there. He will be missed by many.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn of the home; one daughter, Lisa Southard and husband Gregg of Gibsonville; one son, Greg Winkler and wife Revonda of Lenoir; one niece, Roberta Whittington and husband Brian of Lenoir; one sister-in-law, Dianne Williams of Valdese; and grandchildren, Ashton Southard and husband Doug Everhart of Madison Heights, Michigan, and Will Southard of the U.S. Coast Guard in Fort Macon, N.C.
A graveside service will be held Friday, Feb. 19, 2021, at Green Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery at 2 p.m. conducted by Pastor Randy Baker, the Rev. Gary Shew, and Speaker Bob Church.
Due to COVID-19, social distancing and masks will be required.
Serving as pallbearers will be Bob Church, Ross Winkler, David Eggers, Den Brinkley, George Church, and Terry Reid.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
