Hibriten’s boys returned to the floor Thursday for the first time since their 74-40 win over Draughn on Jan. 6 after being quarantined for two weeks. The Panthers’ visit to Bunker Hill didn’t go their way as the Bears held Hibriten (1-1) to 23 points in the first half and 17 in the second in their 57-40 win. The Panthers’ boys visited West Iredell on Friday and host West Caldwell on Tuesday, Jan. 26.
Hibriten’s girls also lost to unbeaten Bunker Hill 47-42 on Thursday and look to the rivalry matchup with West Caldwell on Tuesday. The Panthers fall to 2-4 on the season, while Bunker Hill improved to 6-0.
In another girls-only matchup, East Burke defeated West Caldwell 53-12, pushing the Warriors to 0-4 on the season. West Caldwell’s boys’ game at East Burke has been rescheduled to Feb. 5 because of a positive test on the Cavaliers.
South Caldwell is scheduled to play at St. Stephens Friday and host Alexander Central on Tuesday, but the Cougars’ schedule is in flux because of a potential exposure to the virus. Alexander Central played Freedom Tuesday, and Freedom entered quarantine on Wednesday.
Scheduling continues to be a challenge for area basketball teams as exposures to COVID-19 force teams to the sidelines. Hibriten announced Friday that its girls’ basketball game against Draughn, which was postponed because the Wildcats are in quarantine, has been rescheduled for Saturday, Feb. 6. The junior varsity will tip at noon with the varsity girls following.
