Saturday’s scheduled doubleheader between the Cobras and Surry had an early ending in Game 1 as the home plate umpire was injured and could not continue. Caldwell came out of the game with a 12-4 win in seven innings.

Will Westbrock was the winning pitcher for Caldwell. He gave up four runs on five hits, walked four and struck out seven. Scout Nichols struck out three and picked up the save.

Hayden Setzer hit a home run and knocked in two runs for the Cobras. Darien Farley was 2-for 2 with a stolen base. Jake Ortiz was 2-for-3 and scored three runs. Jermie Greene scored three runs and added a run batted in on a sacrifice fly. Michael Logan had an RBI single.

In Sunday’s doubleheader, Caldwell took a 7-2 seven-inning win in Game 1. Seth Willis was the winning pitcher.

The Cobras won Game 2 14-1 in five innings with Setzer getting the win on the mound. John Melton blasted a pair of home runs for Caldwell, which improves to 20-7 overall and is 10-0 in Region 10, Division III play.

Caldwell will play Catawba Valley at 6 p.m. Wednesday at LP Frans Stadium in Hickory, and the Cobras will visit Rockingham for a three-game set. They will play a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday and will close with a 1 p.m. game on Sunday.

Softball Caldwell 9-3, Surry 5-11

The Cobras split Saturday’s doubleheader at Surry, winning Game 1 9-5 and dropping an 11-3 decision in a six-inning Game 2.

Caldwell led Game 1 6-2 after five innings and put the game out of reach with three runs in the top of the seventh. Ashlyn Castle hit a two-run home run for the Cobras, while Jada Wilson, Taylor Moody and Alyssa McCrary had two RBI each for Caldwell. Mackenzie Johnson also had an RBI for Caldwell.

Wilson was the winning pitcher, allowing five runs on 10 hits while striking out four.

Surry bounced back in Game 2, taking an 11-3 six-inning win over the Cobras.

Jenna Davis, Brianna Lewis and Hailey Robertson had an RBI each; Castle hit a double and took the loss in the circle for Caldwell.

On Sunday, the Cobras split a doubleheader at Patrick Henry. Caldwell won Game 1 3-2, while the Patriots won Game 2 10-9.

Castle hit three doubles in Game 1, and Wilson got the win in the circle.

Statistics from Game 2 were not available.

Caldwell’s record now stands at 20-12 overall, 10-4 in Region 10 Division II West play. The Cobras will host Cleveland in a Friday doubleheader with the first pitch set for 2 p.m.
