Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute exploded for 50 second-half points and had three players in double figures as the Cobras defeated Combine Academy 82-62 on Wednesday.

Caldwell (13-2) was led by Charles Bryson with 16 points, followed by Shawn Nelson with 12 and Josh Dupree with 11.

Other scorers for the Cobras were Toyaz Soloman with eight points, Caleb Mauldin with seven, Isaiah Pruitt with five and Kalib Baker, Amarie Elijah-Kirby and Deonte Randolph with four each. Also, RJ Black finished with three points, while Merdi Asumani, Chance Bryson, Garreth Edgecombe and Gracjan Kolodziej all finished with two points apiece.

The Cobras open Region 10 Division 1 play on Saturday at Richard Bland.

High Schools Swimming

Hibriten and South Caldwell dominated a four-team swim meet Wednesday at the Lenoir Aquatic Center.

The Spartans’ boys defeated West Caldwell 51-12, Hibriten 42-30 and East Burke 49-24. The Panthers got wins over West Caldwell (46-11) and East Burke (41-28). The Warriors dropped a 41-20 decision to the Cavaliers.

On the girls’ side, the Spartans defeated West Caldwell 54-18 and beat East Burke 57-18. Hibriten claimed a 46-15 victory over the Warriors as well as a narrow 38-37 win over South Caldwell and a 52-15 romp over the Cavs. East Burke defeated West Caldwell 33-23.

Overall, the Spartans scored 142 total points to claim first place in the boys’ meet, followed by Hibriten with 117. East Burke finished with 93 points, and West Caldwell finished with 43.

South Caldwell also claimed the girls’ meet with 148 points, just ahead of Hibriten with 136. The Cavaliers finished with 66 points, and West Caldwell scored 56 points.

In total, the Spartans combined for 290 points to claim the win. Hibriten finished with 253 points, followed by East Burke with 159, while West Caldwell totaled 99 points.

All three county teams will compete in the annual Caldwell County Championships, scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Lenoir Aquatic Center.


Hibriten’s wrestling match against South Caldwell, originally set for this evening, has been postponed until a later date. Hibriten Athletic Director Derek Reeves said in a Thursday-morning email that a makeup date will be announced when the Northwestern Conference can work it into the schedule.
