Boys Tennis

The Northwestern Foothills Athletic Conference announced its tournament champions and regional qualifiers on Wednesday.

Hibriten’s Jacob Norwood was the singles runner-up. He and Evan Van Horn qualified for regionals in singles. The doubles duo of JT Spears and Nathanial Wright also were runners-up in the doubles tournament and will advance to regional competition.

The regional tournament will be held May 7-8 at Newton-Conover High School. The state tournament is scheduled for May 14-15.

Middle Schools Girls Soccer

William Lenoir Middle School defeated East Alexander 5-1 on Wednesday. Avery Harris led the Wildcats with four goals and an assist, and Raegan Watts scored the final goal. Bella Hawkins and Lilly Jaroszewski had two assists each, and Sydney Watkins had five saves in the goal. Lily Wright, Bryana Giron and Sarah Spann were credited with strong efforts on defense.

Local Colleges Baseball

Pioneers 9, Cobras 8 (10 innings)

Spartanburg Methodist rallied from an 8-6 deficit in the bottom of the ninth, scoring two runs to send the game into extra innings before scoring the winning run in the bottom of the 10th.

Caldwell led 4-0 through three and a half innings, but Spartanburg Methodist scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth to pull ahead 6-4. The Cobras (22-9) scored two runs in the top of the eighth to tie the game and added two more in the top of the ninth before the Pioneers (31-16) staged their comeback.

Jermie Greene hit a solo home run for the Cobras. Noah Love, Cole Hales, Michael Logan and Mason Lyda all had two hits each. Tyler Bradley and Love had two RBI apiece.

The Cobras close out the regular season this weekend with a three-game series at Thomas Nelson. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday and close the series with a single game on Sunday.
