GAMEWELL — West Caldwell’s JaKobe Hood scored a game-high 27 points as the Warriors’ highly anticipated matchup with Maiden fizzled out almost immediately as they held the Blue Devils scoreless for the first 6:28 of the game and romped to a 68-51 win that launched West Caldwell into a first-place tie with Lincolnton in the Catawba Valley Athletic Conference.
The Warriors (6-7, 3-0 CVAC) jumped out to an 11-0 lead before Raheem Misher, who led the Blue Devils in scoring with 19, put Maiden’s first point on the board with 1:32 left in the first quarter, which ended with West Caldwell leading 13-4.
The second quarter belonged to Malik Patterson, who dropped in 12 points as West Caldwell, which led by as many as 26, erupted for 26 points in the period and carried a 39-15 lead into halftime.
After the break, it was the Blue Devils’ turn to clamp down on the defensive end as Maiden (8-5, 2-1 CVAC) kept the Warriors from scoring for the first 2:45 of the third quarter, whittling the Warriors’ down to 15 late in the period before West Caldwell’s Adrian Gonzales converted a three-point play to push the lead back to 18 before closing the third with a 50-31 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Maiden would get no closer than 14 the rest of the way.
Patterson, who scored 22 points, and Hood were a two-headed monster for the Warriors as the two combined for 48 of the Warriors’ 68 points. Truitt McKinney chipped in with six points, followed by Quinton Ford, Kaylen Bowers and Gonzales with three points each. Demontay Michaux rounded out the scoring with 2 points.
Next up for the Warriors is a visit from Lincolnton (5-7), which knocked off Bandys 56-41 on Tuesday to improve to 3-0 in the CVAC. The winner of Friday’s matchup will hold sole possession of first place in the conference.
In other basketball action on Tuesday, Hibriten’s girls improved to 11-3 on the year with a dominating 63-18 win at home over Hickory Christian Academy. The Panthers return to action next week as they open conference play on Tuesday at Freedom (10-1). Individual statistics were not available.
Hibriten’s boys were also scheduled to face Hickory Christian, but no information from the game was available. The Panthers (5-6) also are scheduled to visit Freedom on Tuesday for their Northwestern 3A/4A opener.
